I pre-ordered the book the day you announced it and at this point I'm as excited as you are :) Have a great time with your kids! Sometimes those rainy can't-do-anything-but-talk-and-board-games weekends turn out to be the best and most memorable ones.

Yes, a little R&R doesn't sound so bad right now!

I hope you get that calendar worked out so all your future rentals are less hectic!

Here’s a best laid plan I still regret: I have 2 jobs, and one holiday I saved all the holiday tasks—packing for a road trip, gift shopping, wrapping, etc—for the first of the two weeks I was out from job #1. Batch tasking, I thought. No need to add holiday stuff to my regular to-do list, I thought. I was entering burnout and thought this plan could ease the load. But then the lead facilitator for job #2 was out with COVID and the whole first week of “vacation” went to subbing for her 5 classes plus prep. And I had to cram all the holiday stuff around the subbing. The recuperation I was banking on didn’t happen, and I very much regretted my brilliant holiday batch-tasking plan.

One of my kids has gotten sick before almost every major trip we've taken as a family and I now officially have travel PTSD. I'm a planner and my older son has autism, so this means we're pushing back/rescheduling detailed itineraries while we wait for a fever to break OR we're white knuckling the decision to just go until we get on a plane. I love to travel with my kids (they have no chill at home, so I'd rather be on the road seeing something new than bouncing off our walls at home) but it's happened so many times at this point that I'm starting to think twice before booking anything.

I've been in my stepson's life for over 11 years and for about 7 of them I was the main person signing him up for any extracurriculars/summer camps. I always try to sign up for things as far in advance as possible. One year I was feeling really good that I had gotten him signed up early for a science/nature day camp at Lincoln Park here in the neighborhood we live in SEATTLE. I always have all the confirmation/legal paperwork emails go to my husband's email address as he's the legal guardian so I didn't see any of the emails coming in in the months leading up to the camp (and he has ADHD so he doesn't always look thoroughly at emails coming through). The 1st day of the camp arrives, my husband drives him to the park, they walk all over the park and don't find any camp going on there except for a YMCA camp. My husband calls the contact number for the camp and finds out that I had accidentally signed my stepson up for a camp that was taking place at Lincoln Park in CHICAGO! I felt really really stupid and now we had an upset kid with nothing to do for a week other than bemoan that he didn't have more screen time and he was "SO BORED!" In my defense, this camp was doing a camp in Seattle it was just at a location we couldn't get him to easily (other side of the city) and they had the sign up listed in such a way that it looked like there were two locations in Seattle not just the one! This was several years ago now so now I just think it's funny I signed him up for a day camp in a different state :) Thankfully this year he's 14 years old and I just let him and my husband figure out what he was going to do this summer, it was very nice just having to deal with camps for my daughter!

This whole school year has been best laid plans and the universe had other plans. I was just reflecting on how amazing the kids have done this year just growing and handling a lot of disruptions really well. The adults...well, we did our best.

We recently had the same thing happen to our mortgage and we’re effectively being priced out. It’s happened twice since we bought the house in July 2023! I hope you had a nice trip!
